Sounds kind of mysterious and dirty, huh? Well, this post is about an undervalued superfood that can actually be cleansing and a diet staple: black rice. (aka: forbidden rice or purple rice).
With all the talk these days of superfoods and antioxidants, one word that may sound familiar (and be hard to pronounce) is anthocyanin. Anthocyanins are bioflavonoids (chemical structures found in plants) that are responsible for the blue, purple and red color in things like berries and red wine. These bioflavonoids have many superpowers, including inflammation regulation, connective tissue support, and anti-tumor properties. They are also known for their cardio-protective properties, from preventing atherosclerosis to lowering blood pressure.
While the media often touts the health benefits of eating blueberries and drinking a daily glass of vino, we rarely, if ever seem to hear about black rice. Well, not only does black rice also contain anthocyanins, it contains more of these powerful antioxidants than berries and wine, along with more vitamin E and fiber.
Black rice is also an economical choice, compared to buying berries. I don’t think I am alone in my cringe when I glance at a mere pint of organic blueberries being sold for $5.99. In my opinion, black rice has a deeper, more robust flavor than white or brown rice, and cooks just as easily. So, enjoy this “forbidden” and underrated superfood!
